All About Truck Insurance
Truck insurance is one of the most common policies sold in the auto insurance industry especially in Oklahoma and Texas. But driving a truck is very different than driving a car or SUV. Trucks are great for towing, tailgating, and moving. Trucks are one of the most popular vehicles bought by residents in Oklahoma and Texas. But they also cost more to insure than a normal car does, but shouldn’t be much more than 10-15% higher than a normal car.

Not all trucks are created equal. Auto insurance rates for trucks have many different factors including value and insurance symbol. We have found that the Chevy Colorado is the cheapest truck to insure. The Colorado has a towing capacity between 3,500 and 7,000 pounds. You will see the Ford F-150 as one of the below vehicles and this truck has notoriously been the most popular truck in America.
Here is a list of some other trucks that are cheap to insure:
Chevrolet Colorado
Chevrolet Silverado
Ford F-150
GMC Canyon
GMC Sierra
Honda Ridgeline
Nissan Frontier
Nissan Titan
Toyota Tacoma
Toyota Tundra
In our experience claims that are caused by a truck does substantially more damage than what a smaller car could ever do. It is important to remember not all trucks can be insured on a personal auto insurance policy but rather must be insured on a commercial auto insurance policy so they can be covered correctly. Here are a few types of trucks that we found that might need to be insured on a commercial auto insurance policy:
- Flat Bed Trucks
- 3500 and above truck models
- Trucks used to haul trailers or other large equipment
Commercial auto insurance prices are substantial higher than personal auto insurance prices for a few reasons. Here are a few we found:
- Employees could be driving the vehicles which present a greater risk for the insurance company.
- Trucks could be used to haul large equipment or trailers
- Doing business in your truck can overall just bring about a greater risk for the insurance company.
Here are a few Commercial Auto Insurance Companies we found that have affordable prices:
- Progressive
- State Farm
- Mercury
Commercial truck insurance is very different than a personal auto policy. There are many endorsements and exclusions. Due to the complexity of the commercial policy, we recommend talking to an agent before purchasing so they can make sure you are covered properly.

Do I need additional coverage for my truck?
We do recommend carrying higher liability limits if you own a truck. Just because the truck can do much more damage to other vehicles compared to what a Prius could do. Here is an example, if a big Dodge Ram 3500 hits a small car compared to a Prius hitting it. The Dodge truck would do much greater damage. So, you will want to make sure your liability limits are high enough to cover any damage your truck may do.

Does personal truck insurance cover hauling a trailer?
It depends on what auto insurance company you choose. So, we always recommend you asking your insurance agent or company before you tow anything. But in most cases the liability coverage does extend when hauling a trailer to cover bodily injury and property damage caused to someone else by your trailer.
If you carry comprehensive and collision coverage on your personal auto policy then physical damage coverage could transfer to the trailer in case of an accident but there will be coverage limitations. But, again this varies depending on what company you are with. We recommend taking out the comprehensive and collision coverage from the place you are renting the trailer from. It is important to always contact your insurance company before hauling a trailer to go over your coverages. Most nonstandard auto insurance companies will not transfer comprehensive and collision coverage on a trailer even if you are carrying it on your personal auto policy. We did find that many larger national companies will though.

Is my additional equipment covered on my truck insurance?
Many people like to add on additional equipment to their trucks like a lift kit or custom wheels or even a camper. If you add any of these to your truck, be sure and let your auto insurance company know so they can make sure it covered the right way. Many auto insurance policies will not cover this additional
equipment automatically and it will be an additional charge. Some carriers will not offer additional coverage at all. So be sure and disclose any of this extra equipment up front to your insurance company so you can be covered appropriately.

Concluding thoughts on Truck Insurance
